3 Working And Tested Ways to Convince Your Parents to Let You Blog

by Rahul Kuntala · 52 comments

I rarely accept guest posts on this blog, but when I do it must be fascinating. This post is written by Nishant Arora of Inside Tech Tricks. Lets dive into the article without much ado..

convince parents to blogThe reason you clicked on this post is you are also facing the same problem.

I am a student, and I am a blogger.

Only a student and a blogger (together) can understand how difficult it is to manage both of them together. Our life just goes like Spiderman and superman, two really tiring jobs to do

Actually when you talk about Internet before someone the first thing that strikes his mind is social networking. That’s the influence of social media in our lives and second thing which comes in mind of many people is porn. We will not discuss it here.

So the question is how to change their mentality and point of view so that they don’t disturb you when you blog.

My family was not so convinced with the online style of doing business and making money online they didn’t understood why I blog and why I am so passionate about writing so what I did was followed some steps to convince them and show them that I am not wasting my time on internet.

When it comes to convincing your family, there is one thing I want to say. If you can’t convince you family then stop dreaming because you can’t convince anyone else in this world.

So from my real life experience here is, some working ways to convince your family to let you blog.

1. Pick the right time – create proper environment at your home

Want to finally tell your family that you want to opt blogging as career, tell them that you love blogging more than pursuing engineering or medical studies. Well, directly saying it is not a piece of cake.

What will dad say?

What will be mom’s reaction?

How will the other relatives react on knowing this?

These kinds of questions actually start eating you from inside when your family is already not convinced with the online stuff.

From my experience the first thing you need to do is be patient and start creating environment in your home. Like whenever something related to writing or business comes up then connect the chat with online stuff.

Do you know that a blogger’s income can reach more than any IITian?

Show the income proofs of other bloggers. Let your parents know that ‘blogging’ is an emerging media to make money online.

These type of activities will create positive side of this field on your family and they don’t know that you are just preparing them for the final talk.

Whenever you have time, like during dinner when the whole family is together start discussing about blogging success stories how a guy started working from home and now makes millions from his passion. In my case I used the story of Amit Agarwal from Digital Inspiration.

2. Go hard or go home

Want to be a blogger? Then start working hard on everything except blogging.

It might sound stupid but this strategy really works on your family.

So what if you don’t like to study actually no one does but there is no loss if work hard in this semester and score some good marks and show your family that you are now concentrating towards studies.

Every parent wants their son to be the topper of the class but they don’t understand that there is only one first position.

If you can’t perform well yourself then decrease the marks of your friends and tell them that you got highest marks in your class.

This will tell your family that you are now serious about your studies and your career and you have started to think about your life this time seriously.

3. Show them your dedication

Whenever you work online show them your dedication, just block all the other stuff and start typing but remember when you do so then keep in mind that there should be someone around you who could observer you.

When your family members will that how much dedicated you are towards blogging and you love what you do then I am sure they will take your decision more seriously.

After this just go and tell them what plans you have for your future, if they are still not happy with your decision then there are two things which always work

  1. Rebel
  2. Emotional Blackmail

The first three ways worked for me and I didn’t require using the last two methods.

What if your parents still say NO?

Don’t hesitate in telling them about your online dreams so what if they are not so convinced with the online style of doing business they are your family they will not eat you. They will accept and respect your decision if you are happy with what you are doing. And they will be proud of seeing your name in the world’s best bloggers.

  • First off, know why they are not letting you to blog.
  • Understand that they were brought up differently, they might have misconceptions about online businesses viz scams, frauds etc.
  • Be patient. Don’t give up and try again

How do you convince your parents to keep your blogging? Do you have any more tips?

Coming to the topic, I never had problems with my parents. I’ve been on internet for more than a year and they didn’t stop me being so. Yeah! I was kinda good at studies and for the first time, it helped me, at least in this regard. I really loved the line- Go hard or Go home.

Great tips! If student bloggers are having problem telling their parent what they do. They really shouldn’t give up and continue to convince them to accept what theirs do. Love this post and this is sure going to help a lot of people who’s having this problem.

Wonderful post,

I never had the issue of convincing anyone about my blogging career and internet stuffs because i tend to finish school before venturing into blogging. Now another problem is … Getting done with school and doing nothing but staring at your computer screen. That makes lot of people worry if you really have any focus. But am glad i have things to show for it in a few time so that was convincing.

Reply

Nishant

Yeah Ahmsta, Finishing school is must but some bloggers can’t leave blogging for studies but yeah slowing down the blog during studies is a really good idea that is the reason you won’t find any post on blog during exams.

Hi,
Well blogging can be the form of relaxation for some while it is taken seriously by some bloggers for the best source of income. Well, if you are talking about taking permission, then you must be highlighting students who wish to open their blog and just for them, I think blogging can be taken as the form of relaxation and the best platform to share their ideas with us and nothing else. Well blogging should be allowed by parents because it increases concepts, imagination, ideas and vocabulary on almost every areas of writing. This is all I feel. Thanks for the share!!

Reply

Nishant

You are right Aditi, Blogging is really good for students. From my experience, since i started blogging my grades in English and computer sciences increased rapidly but if you look at the other side my marks in mathematics decreased. It is good for students but in a limit until academics are not affected, Negatively.

Reply

Navneet

I always topped studies since the beginning of my academics . I had a great GK and was also good at Sports and Computers . I came across Blogging and started Blogging even though my studies worsened a little that was not the real problem . The real problem I had was convincing my parents to permit me to earn money online . I am not from a poor family , my parents think that this is the time of my life when I have to enjoy and they bear my expenses . But they don’t understand that I want to be independent and stand on my own legs . I would love to know if you had any tips in convincing my parents with the above concern .

Reply

Nishant

Navneet I think that telling your parents that you are big enough for the purpose and you are not earning money for some specific reason. Just tell them you are paid because you blog that’s it. I mean tell them you are blogging that is the primary reason, money is secondary.
Moreover earning something for your personal expenses and parties is not a bad idea.

Rahul, you won’t believe me that when I just started my blog 2 months ago, I was in same situation.

No one was allowing to blog and even I HAD NO MONEY TO BUY DOMAIN.

That was really bad and even no one agreed to give me 10$ for domain. I made it via writing and then my earnings started. Now everyone is satisfied with what I do. Also I give full time to studies too. ;)

Reply

Hamza Sheikh

Hi Nishant, your words really describe the situation you have faced while taking a start with blogging.

I have been blogging since last 6 to 7 years, from the 8th grade. I have faced the similar situation in my career. Moreover, my family was not believing in the online earning, and all this stuff. But I started my journey with hiding my work, and one day I produced results and then showed up things to everyone :) Yes! Go Hard or Go Home is the best example!

If one can’t do hard work, then he/she must drop its work. Blogging is not easy as it sounds.

Reply

Nishant

Thanks Hamza, Go Hard Or Go Home!

Hi!

I have been in the content writing business for the past many years. Although, my parents were never convinced with my choice of profession when I started but since I started making money, they have learnt to accept it.

Reply

Nishant

That is great, money is one of those things which can easily change anyone’s perception.
Good Luck :-)

Awesome post. Its really hard to convince parents who do not know much about internet and computer. I was also in such a situation. Explaining them about what we are doing is the best way to convince them.

Reply

Nishant

Harish, convincing our parents is really difficult but it is easy at the same time because you know them very properly and understand the technique by which they can be convinced easily

Reply

rahul

i agree to your dedication pont..if parent’s would see us working dedicately, then they would have no problem in this job.

Reply

Nishant

Yeah Rahul, Our parents want to see us happy and if they see us doing something which we love sooner or later they will accept it

As a blogger and a mature individual, you ought to be responsible for your actions and certainly be accountable to yourself without necessarily seeking the approval of others. I am in anyways asking anyway to be deviant or deviant myself.
I for instance blog because I simply love being on the internet.

Kulwant Nagi

I would like to share one real incidence from my life -
2 days back my cousin sister was at our home and here goes our conversation.
She – What you do Kulwant?
Me – I am doing my online business.
She – what actually you do?
Me – Kind of website running stuff.
She – No, I mean what you do there?
Me – I am having some websites and making money from them.
She – But what you do there?

After this conversation I was like :O

You can understand how I would have felt when I heard same question 3 times.
If I would have said, “I am doing job in TCS as Engineer”.
She should have answered !! OK. :)

Now lets come to your article.
I agree that convincing parents and relatives is too much task because our society is not a kind of society where people are techie and they don’t know the power of internet.
For them internet is still like a ghost (yeah, I know).

So showing them successful people and your popularity on internet can be a good step to convince them.

It is said that, “Money Speaks”.
So once you will show some money to your parents then they will be satisfied and happy too.
Who care about damn society. People are meant to talk so keep them talking and show them what you are.

Thanks for this share !! Bravo Man !!

Nishant

I agree kulwant in our society people believe in working day and night outside home. A guy working from home is considered as retard and useless.

i won’t blame them, development in our country and cyber fraudgeries are responsible for this mindset

I don’t think that our parents or relatives will even understand our positions on internet earnings because in our culture men are meant to work hard from outside home not inside home.

Reply

Nishant

Thats the general mindset of people in our society, they think that this guy is working from home either he belongs to the underworld or he is earning in some unethical ways.

Nishant you have nicely describes the ways and the way i like most is to tell story of successful bloggers and also how much money they are getting because parents first preference is to know how much you can earn from Blogging.

Thanks Ravi, When you talk about other bloggers it first of all helps your parents understand your plans for the future as they are already not so convinced with the internet lifestyle it also satisfies them by knowing that your future is secure

Well, some of the things went with me the same way and I was not surprised when I spotted Amit Agarwal in the post :) . Because I too talked about him to my parents, friends and my siblings. I think many of us did it. But I did not have to talk much about my blogging stuff as I already had some other income.

Innovative post!

Thanks!
